Avengers: Doomsday Hype Unveils Marvel’s Big Comeback Theory With RDJ as Doctor Doom
Avengers: Doomsday continues to be a huge beacon of optimism and really, a safe bet to rake in a pile of cash when it hits theaters later this year on December 18. Marvel has finished toying with fragmentation their stories, now they are going in with the big guns.
Since Endgame, things have felt decidedly different. The Multiverse Saga has been a rough ride, and the franchise’s once assured commercial success with every release is much less certain. Marvel did a homework for entering in phase 6 of the marvel cinematic universe.
MCU returned with Avengers: Doomsday to scale up the steam on the box office and marvel fans. So, let’s take a look at what makes the hype so intense.
The Ultimate Wildcard: Robert Downey Jr. Returns
If you need to ensure that a movie will have audiences showing up, you bring back the face of the franchise. But Marvel didn’t stop at simply bringing back Robert Downey Jr. for a heartwarming cameo — they executed one of the most inspired and insane casting pivots in comic book movie history.
Bringing back RDJ as the title villain, Victor Von Doom, is just the charge of electricity the franchise needed. Which is to say, there is a beautiful, terrible poetry to the fact that the man who pretty much created the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Iron Man is now coming back to maybe rip the multiverse a new one as Doctor Doom.
This is no longer us fighting some rand cgi alien army, the remaining heroes are going to have to face a villain who has the face of their greatest, fallen savior. The psychological impact on the characters like Spider-Man and Thor is going to be just pure cinema and that alone makes me think hardcore fans and casual moviegoers alike will be buying a ticket just to see how it all plays out.
A Roster Bursting at the Seams
Now, Doom is only as good as the heroes trying to stop him, and Doomsday is promising a lineup that rivals and maybe even exceeds! – the scale of Endgame.
Based on the advanced previews from the industry events, it’s not like we’re looking at the current line-up of the Avengers. We are talking about a giant, cross-franchise team-up. Fantastic Four are official making their way into the present day race with Marvel’s “First Family” coming up against the kings of Wakanda and the Thunderbolts.
Also, the X-Men are getting strong speculation as joining the battle. Just imagine the original core Avengers plus the Fantastic Four (assuming they are introduced) and some big names from the mutant faction all on one screen. Add in the ridiculously tenacious rumors about old legacy characters from the previous films returning including rumors that Chris Evans will be back as Steve Rogers and you have a recipe for the kind of audience cheering moments that made the Infinity Saga so legendary.
The Hype Machine is Officially Awake
The movie itself is important, but so are the things about it outside of the movie, and Marvel is already showing it knows how to hype up. The global hype machines are cranking up and ready to pounce with dazzle-packed, multi-tier advertising blitzes.
1. The CinemaCon Footage Drop
Earlier this year, industry insiders got to see exclusive footage at CinemaCon, and even the descriptions sent the internet into a frenzy. Hearing about Doctor Doom stopping Thor’s Stormbreaker, or Shang-Chi getting it on with Gambit in the X-Mansion, reminded everyone just how massive the MCU could be.
Though that footage was held tightly under wraps, trade insiders are already abuzz that the first public trailer is right around the corner and could be attached to major theatrical releases later this spring. Marvel knows we are desperate to see it, and they’re playing the waiting game oh, so perfectly.
2. The Endgame Theatrical Rerelease
Maybe the cleverest marketing ploy of the year is what’s going on this September. The Russo Brothers are coming back to the director’s chairs for Doomsday but, in the meantime, they are leading a theatrical rerelease of Avengers: Endgame. But this isn’t only a trip down memory lane. New Doomsday connective footage reportedly is being attached to the rerelease, according to the studio.
What Marvel is doing, in bringing fans back into theaters to watch the climax of the old era just to get a brief look at the new era, is literally straddling the line between the most bankable past and the most hyped up future for them. It’s a master-class in event marketing.
Conclusion
There’s nothing wrong with saying that the Marvel Cinematic Universe stumbled for a few years. The series expanded, the VFX pipelines were strained, and the overarching story line dulled.
But it’s always been a dumb move to count Marvel out. The Russos are now back at the helm, RDJ is stepping into the ultimate villain role, and an unprecedented crossover roster is lining up, meaning that Avengers: Doomsday isn’t your typical sequel. It’s a major reset. When December 18 comes around, it won’t be shocking that the entire planet will suddenly realize what made us fall in love with these movies in the first place.
