Why a Painting of Yellow Earplugs Means So Much to Marina Acton

There’s a fascinating story behind one of the most meaningful pieces of art in Marina Acton’s collection.
The painting is “Earplugs” by Pierce Brosnan, and its meaning for Marina goes far beyond the fact that it was created by a famous actor.
Pierce shared the inspiration behind the painting with Marina. For him, the idea came from his experience working on a James Bond production, where he had to wear earplugs to protect his hearing from explosions and intense noise.
However, the painting has a completely different meaning for Marina. It reminds her of a tough time, following brain surgery in 2019, Marina began having regular brain MRIs at Stanford. Each time she undergoes an MRI, she is given a pair of yellow earplugs to protect her hearing from the machine’s intense noise.
When she first saw Pierce’s painting, the connection was immediate.
The same simple object — yellow earplugs — represented two completely different experiences. For Pierce, they were connected to the noise and explosions of a James Bond film set. For Marina, they were connected to the sound of an MRI machine and the experience of monitoring her health after surgery.
Marina eventually contacted Pierce and offered $500,000 for the original painting, an offer he accepted.
The painting will now have a new home at Marina’s forthcoming longevity medical center on Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills, where patients will be able to see the original work.
For Marina, the painting is not simply a celebrity artwork or an investment. It represents something much more personal — how an ordinary object can unexpectedly become connected to some of the most significant moments in our lives.
