The Witcher Season 4 — Liam Hemsworth is Taking Over From Henry Cavill
The Witcher Season 4 on Netflix has a new look under that familiar silver wig after three seasons with Henry Cavill’s dour voice of gravel as Geralt of Rivia. As you might expect, the internet has opinions about Liam Hemsworth and now He is taking over one of the most demanding roles on television.
Almost three years since Cavill’s shocking Instagram announcement in October 2022. He wrote, My time playing Geralt of Rivia has been monster and adventures and now I am putting down my swords and medallion for Season 4. Millions of fans were left to wonder why someone that was so clearly in love with this character would just give up. The statement was polite, even Shakespearean in its valediction.
The Departure That Confused Millions
Henry Cavill was never just an actor they paid. Cavill was already a fan of the original Witcher books by Andrzej Sapkowski before Netflix came along. Even in the (at times) crazy storylines of the series, his devotion to lore, detail, and Geralt made the character feel genuine.
There was certainly much speculation after his exit. Was there a clash of creative vision between him and the showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich? Schmidt Hissrich said the answer is simpler, just less dramatic — Cavill wanted to do other things. The showrunner said, He had ambitions for other parts which he wanted to go after. We feel that it is important to allow the citizens to do what they want to do.
Be aware that Cavill remains busy post-exit. He has landed key roles in the Warhammer 40k TV adaptation and the Highlander reboot two labor of love projects that align perfectly with his well documented passion for complex, character driven properties.
Assembling the Ensemble Around the New Geralt
Along with the news of Cavill leaving the role, Liam Hemsworth, Gale Hawthorne in the entire Hunger Games series, was announced as his replacement. It felt a little like one legend was handing off the baton to another, and the timing was almost cinematic. But there was a massive elephant in the room during this move that Netflix could not pretend away in the narrative itself. As demonstrated by his own words As a Witcher fan, I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia, he also played the role as a fan of the franchise.
How today’s cast reacts is just one barometer of an actor’s ability to come to terms with the role that is well known as a particular persona within the theatrical tradition. In production interviews, Anya Chalotra, Yennefer’s actress, gave a positive judgement. “It was a real ease,” she said, speaking about the chemistry that was developed between she, Hemsworth and Freya Allan (Ciri) while shooting scenes. It was very organic. We all felt like we were playing dress-up,” one said.
The James Bond Precedent
When Schmidt Hissrich compared the scenario to the James Bond franchise, she offered a useful perspective: “James Bond is a great example of a character that goes on living through different actors.” It’s not that you hate the other James Bonds; everyone has a favorite.
The comparison is reasonable. Roger Moore, Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig all brought something different to 007, but none ever had to play the same part twice. The part is not written for a single actor.

Conclusion
From a production standpoint, Netflix has proven adept at managing this sort of off-screen drama with other franchises. Now, the big question is whether Hemsworth can carry the show’s narrative weight while adapting Sapkowski’s final three novels Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake as a complex, morally-questionable character for two more seasons.
