James Gunn Confirms Superman: Man of Tomorrow as Sequel, Sets July 2027 Release
Director James Gunn just dropped the title and release date of the new Superman Movie on his official social media account. Superman: Man of Tomorrow landing in theaters on July 9, 2027! He shared this news with an illustration of Superman and Lex Luthor by DC artist Jim Lee as stated on People. The 2025 hit Superman movie is ready to throw a new part on screen and it’s a part of new DC Universe’s “Superman Saga.”
Returning Cast
The cast member name is not officially announced but it’s expected to see 2025 Superman cast in the Superman sequel. David Corenswet as Superman is returning in Man of Tomorrow along with Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Both shared this exciting news online right after James Gunn made his announcement, confirming their return. Comicbook has also reported Corenswet and Rachel had signed to reprise their role in a sequel, Rachel will likely be returned as Lois Lane in the next part. In the previous part she played Lois character in 2025 Superman alongside with Corenswet.
According to EW, Fans might see other heroes of the first Superman film from the “Superman Saga.” In Superman 2025, Guy Gardner as Green Lantern appeared along with Mister Terrific and Hawkgirl. Isabela Merced (hawkgirl) quoted online with “See you soon”, hints at her return. However, Corenwet and Hoult’s return is confirmed with Brosnahan almost included. The announcement for other cast members is expected soon by Director James Gunn.
Plot Expectations From Shared Illustration
Official Plot is still on the hang, but the early art suggests the main villain will be Lex Luthor again. Jim Lee’s illustration of Lex Luthor covered with green and purple ‘Warsuit’ and stands next to Superman. In DC Comics and Gunn’s teaser revealed Luthor made this suit to get equally stronger as Superman. Gunn’s post cleared the fuss and made sure that the sequel will show Luthor’s rivalry with Superman. As Variety notes, Luthor failed to win the war with his clones in the first part. Now, he plans to fight by himself in armor. Man of Tomorrow appears to be a classic set up of Superman vs Luthor showdown.
Superman and Lex Luthor in Superman
The new film is a part of Superman Saga said by Gunn on Hollywood Reporter — it’s not a direct sequel. Superman will be a big part in it, but the synopsis is still not revealed yet. The Superman 2025 is also considered to be part of Superman Saga, the sequel expected to open more links to the DC Universe. But for now, the main plot is Luthor in powered armor facing Superman.

Production of Superman: “Man of Tomorrow”
According to GamesRadar, James Gunn mentioned in an interview about finishing the story concept and now just scripting it. So, it hinted that Man of Tomorrow is in pre-production. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also confirmed the next installment of DC is in preparation under the Gunn’s production, which will be starting soon. All points hinted towards its filming expected to start soon in 2026. After all, Gunn shared a post with the movie title and release date along with Superman vs Lex Luthor drawing. However, the official trailer or poster isn’t released yet but the artwork created a buzz among the Superman fans.
Lois Lane and Superman
Superman: “Man of Tomorrow” released date and title is confirmed by James Gunn. David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult will return in a sequel on 9 July 2027. Rachel Brosnahan will likely return as Lois Lane but another cast member return is still not confirmed.
