Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Review: The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen is Truly Back
Daredevil Born Again Season 2 are at last back out on the dank, blood-streaked streets of New York City. Daredevil: Born Again released its Season 2 premiere on Disney+ and It’s exactly what television has been missing lately.
Daredevil: Born Again season 1 wasn’t perfect because it didn’t have some gritty magic in that but the showrunner didn’t ignore this. They gave us action with an emotional packed series to cheer. Season 2 is a huge, no-holds-barred, fist bump to the original Netflix era.
Daredevil fights are more brutal and bone-crushing that we missed so hard. But now it is back with the crushing moral dilemmas. The stakes actually feel more dangerous and they do again. It just feels like we’re finally getting the Matt Murdock we all fell in love with.
Let’s break down episode 1 so we could appreciate what season 2 is bringing to us.
The Story: A City Under Siege and Martial Law
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 begins with our leads in a dire, dangerous place. Upon a leap forward in time, Mayor Wilson Fisk (the always incredible and frightening Vincent D’Onofrio) is, for all intents and purposes, winner of the war. New York City is under martial law, and a bloody Anti-Vigilante Task Force (AVTF) is hunting down anyone who dons a mask. His purpose is tailored to serve justice as the whole city is corrupted and the system is devastated.
This bleak new normal forces Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and his partner in crime-fighting Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) into the shadows, working completely off the books as they attempt to marshal an underground resistance against a very powerful dude who happens to own the government, the cops, and the media.

They showed us so real and raw that makes the story arc so incredibly powerful. The series tackles heavy real-world subjects, including authoritarianism, state propaganda and weaponizing the law. It’s not merely a cape-clad crimefighter punching thugs in shadowy alleys, but plain, everyday people looking for hope when those-in-charge are corrupt.
The Good: Gritty Action and The Suit is Back!
Among the larger complaints for some of the recent Marvel shows was that they felt a bit too safe and clean. Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 however, is the antithesis of “safe”. The brawls are brisk, visceral, and absolutely bone-crushing. Right from Episode 1 “The Northern Star,” we get a massive, elaborately choreographed dockside brawl on a freighter ship that rips off the iconic action sequences of the first few seasons.
And the best part? In full Daredevil costume: Daredevil at last! In previous seasons we’d have been waiting ages for him to suit up, torturing the audience with week after week teasing. But here, he is Man Without Fear to the fullest and he is not going to wait until he is dressed up figure fighting Fisk’s men from the get go. Charlie Cox delivers a passionate performance proving that he is the one and only person who could play this role and he is at the peak of his physical capabilities.
Standout Villains and New Faces
A hero is only as good as his villains and this season certainly delivers there. D’Onofrio’s Kingpin is as terrifying as ever, now exchanging his fists for political influence, which makes him untouchable in a different sense. Wilson Bethel also returns as the lethal Bullseye, and without spoiling too much, his dynamic with Daredevil goes in a pretty unexpected and shattering direction right out of the gate.

But the largest and most exciting surprise of them all is that Matthew Lillard is joining the cast as a secretive CIA agent known solely as “Mr. Charles.” Lillard contributes his distinct brand of eccentric energy to the darkness of the series. He’s a pro-wrestler-turned-actor Rorschach test character who is really powerful behind the scenes, and when he’s on screen, he just steals with a smile.
The Return of Jessica Jones
Of course we need to cover Krysten Ritter’s ultimately triumphant return as Jessica Jones. After the cancellation of her own spinoff a couple years back, fans have been begging for her to return. Her snarky yet effortlessly hilarious demeanour compared to dark and moody Matt Murdock will make Marvel loyalists very happy.
That said, if there is an iota of a flaw in Season 2 it is that her presence is just a little bit forced. The Daredevil/Kingpin main story is so tight and down-to-earth in street crime that having other super-powered characters around sometimes detracts from that main story. It is almost as if she was planted to pave the way for future storylines as opposed to being an integral part of this one.
Also the first several episodes are 100% slow burns. On this, Karen and Matt are fighting a huge, politically powerful enemy at a glacial pace. The storyline is a bit repetitive at the beginning, they get a lead, chase it, fight and then come back to square one. But really as the season goes on, all those little tranquil moments culminate into something massive. Critics have already been calling the season finale one of the best works of Marvel Studios television.

Conclusion
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is something far greater than season 1. It debuted with positive reviews and very high critic scores on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s not hard to see why. Showrunner Dario Scardapane knew exactly what made Ree such an amazing character to begin with and fully embraced that.
It’s a dark, politically charged and action-packed yarn that doesn’t dumb down its audience. The Matt Murdock vs. Wilson Fisk rivalry is one of the best rivalries in comic book history and watching it on this level is just great television. It may take a while to get the story moving at breakneck speed, but the savage hand-to-hand combat, Oscar-caliber performances and hair-raising suspense will make you never regret a moment of it.
If you love “street level” superheroes, complicated characters, and crime dramas with a gritty edge, you really do have to be watching this season. Popcorn chomping, lights out, and buckles up.
